Description & Services
Description (Service) S.S. Keewatin is the last surviving UK-built Edwardian-era passenger steamship in the world. Built 5 years before TITANIC and to similar standards but on a smaller scale she is largely intact and captures the splendour of the Victorian age and the power harnessed at the peak of the industrial revolution. Between 1912 and 1965 she and her four sister ships in CP's Great Lakes Fleet took people (first immigrants, later vacationers) and cargo (finished goods west, grain east) to and from Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) fulfilling the promise that brought Alberta and Saskatchewan into Confederation. In the process CP created Port McNicoll... at its peak a village of 7000+... at the eastern terminus, and built Canada's second largest grain elevators there. After nearly half a century in the US as a marine museum, Keewatin was returned to its home port of Port McNicoll in June 2012, where it has been extensively refurbished to become an historical attraction with tours available daily through 5 months of the year.
Tours of the ship are conducted daily, group and student tours may be arranged. Contact our see website for further information and to check for off season hours.
