Duties-To act as a Walking Buddy for an individual experiencing the early stage of Alzheimer's Disease or other dementia.  
-Visit the client home once per week for a brief walk.  
-Establish a safe travel route appropriate to the individual's capabilities.  
-Monitor the travel terrain for risk of falls etc. and offer appropriate guidance as required.  
-Create an enjoyable activity through friendly conversation.  
-Ensure safe return to the client home.

ClientsIndividuals in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease or other dementia. 
Must be physically safe to walk unassisted while needing supervision to ensure safety.  
Experiencing short term memory loss and reduced capabilities but still able to engage in conversation. 
Not known to exhibit difficult behaviors.  
Education provided to address volunteer knowledge and comfort level.

Skills/ExperiencePhysically active, enjoys walking. Attentive to client actions/physical safety. Friendly, comfortable being with people with memory loss. Displays empathy, patience, tact, integrity and good judgment. Responsible and reliable, consistent.
Commitment LengthDisease progression and client age will in some instances provide only a brief period of time for this activity. In other instances, a longer term relationship may develop that is very beneficial and important.

Dates and TimesSchedule to suit client and volunteer availability. Early evening walks may be appropriate for some individuals, but are often less desirable for most who prefer a morning or daytime walk.
SeasonsWeather conditions and outside temperature may influence walking schedule from time to time.
AccessibilityPlacement will consider client/volunteer proximity and related transportation factors. Volunteers wishing to transport their client elsewhere in the community to participate in walking clubs etc. may be authorized to do so with appropriate documentation of safe driving record and vehicle insurance.

TrainingVolunteers will receive orientation to factors relevant to their client's condition and particulars of how to ensure his/her safety.
TransportationVolunteer will determine best method of transportation to go to client home. This issue will be considered when the match is made.
CostCost of Police Check and Driver's Abstract (if needed) will be reimbursed.
