Boating
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of boating using any of a wide variety of watercraft.
Bowling
Programs, often offered by local clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of bowling. Bowling clubs and other recreational bowling programs are often organized into leagues with teams that play one another in organized tournaments.
Cycling
Programs, often offered by local bicycle clubs and/or bicycle shops, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn how to ride a bicycle, participate in group bicycle riding activities and/or to become competitive as amateurs in the sport of bicycle racing. The programs may sponsor or make arrangements for cyclists to participate in cycling competitions, usually at the local, regional or provincial level.
Disability Related Sports
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages with functional or cognitive disabilities to learn, become competitive in and enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities and sports, many of which are played in wheelchairs or have otherwise been modified to accommodate the athletes' disabilities.
Fishing
Programs, often offered by local fishing clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn and enjoy the sport of fly and bait fishing in saltwater and freshwater environments. Many fishing clubs sponsor competitions for members. Also included are programs that maintain private stocked fishing preserves or fish camps that people who enjoy fishing can visit as a vacation option.
Gambling
Organizations that provide opportunities for people of legal age to wager money on games of chance or other activities in hopes of profiting from the outcome.
Games
Programs that provide opportunities for people to learn, become competitive in and enjoy card games, board games, lawn games and other mental or physical competitions which are governed by a set of rules and decided by skill or luck.
General Recreational Activities/Sports
Programs that offer a range of organized recreational activities, sports and games that people of all ages can learn, become competitive in and enjoy.
Golf
Programs, often offered by local golf associations or clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy golf. The programs may offer golf instruction, provide opportunities for golfers to play on a regular basis, make arrangements for golf outings and vacations, and/or sponsor or make arrangements for golfers to participate in amateur tournaments either locally or at golf resorts throughout the country.
Hiking
Programs, often offered by local hiking clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in group backpacking activities on hiking trails in different types of terrain. Individual hikes vary in length and level of difficulty.
Horseback Riding
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy in the art of equitation. The programs may provide western and English riding instruction, jumping instruction, dressage instruction, and opportunities for pleasure riding; and may sponsor horse shows or other informal competitions which enable students and other local riders to demonstrate the skills they have acquired.
Martial Arts
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the martial arts, any of a variety of combat or self-defence arts that are practiced as sports.
Motorcycle Riding
Programs that provide opportunities for people of legal driving age to ride motorcycles as a recreational activity.
Mountain Climbing
Programs, often offered by local mountaineering clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn climbing skills and participate in mountaineering as a recreational activity.
Pickleball
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy pickleball, a game played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the centre using a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles.
Skating
Programs, often offered by local skating clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the sport of skating on a range of surfaces using a variety of equipment.
Skiing
Programs, often offered by local ski clubs, that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy skiing. The programs are generally open to people with a variety of ability levels and interests; and may organize ski trips and sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in skiing competitions. Also included are programs that provide skiing instruction.
Sleigh Rides
Programs that sponsor recreational activities in which participants go for a ride in a horse-drawn vehicle on runners in the snow.
Snowboarding
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy snowboarding, a winter sport in which the individual slides down snow covered trails riding on a device that looks like a short, broad ski without using poles for balance. Included are programs for novices who are interested in recreational snowboarding and want to develop basic skills, and those for serious snowboarders who want to develop skills necessary to become competitive in alpine, freestyle and boardercross snowboarding events.
Snowmobiling
Programs, often offered by local snowmobile clubs, that provide opportunities to participate in group snowmobile rides, racing events, social events and a wide variety of other activities related to the sport of snowmobiling.
Snowshoeing
Programs that provide opportunities for people to learn, become competitive in and enjoy snowshoeing, a winter sport in which participants move over gently sloping snow-covered trails while wearing a flat device resembling a racquet, which is attached to the sole of a boot and used for walking on snow. Also included are organizations that sponsor, hold or make arrangements for athletes to participate in snowshoe competitions.
Surfing
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy surfing.
Team Sports/Leagues
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the cooperative recreational activity or sport of their choice. These programs may provide coaching to help members play efficiently as a team and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Uniforms; access to playing fields, courts and other facilities; sporting equipment; and officials for competitions may also be available.
Tennis
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy tennis. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help people play to the best of their ability and access to tennis courts and tennis equipment; and may sponsor make arrangements for players to participate in tennis tournaments and provide officials for the events.
Track and Field
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages learn, become competitive in and enjoy one or more of the games that are associated with track and field including running, hurdling, pole vaulting, shot put, the long jump, the high jump, the triple jump, discus throwing, hammer throwing and javelin throwing. Heptathlon (a five event contest) and decathlon (a 10 event contest) are also part of track and field.
