Community Treatment Orders

Programs that can arrange a doctor's authorization for a person with a serious mental health disorder to receive treatment or care and supervision in the community as an alternative to continued hospitalization, usually for 90 to 180 days. A community treatment plan is prepared outlining medications, medical appointments and other necessary care. The consent of a person subject to a Community Treatment Order (CTO), or his or her substitute decision-maker, must be voluntary, informed and not coerced, and may be rescinded at any time although that may necessitate re-hospitalization.
