When Environment Canada issues an extreme heat or cold alert, rest areas are available to residents for relief from extreme weather conditions. These can include public buildings such as libraries or community centres during regular business hours. Other buildings such as malls or cinemas that have air conditioning/heating could also be used.

Contact your local municipality before visiting as locations and hours may be extended or limited depending on season and conditions * hours subject to change without notice and locations may be closed on holidays.


Town of Cobourg

Victoria Hall at 55 King Street West will be open on Friday, January 23 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Saturday, January 24 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Sunday, January 25 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Cobourg Public Library at 200 Ontario Street will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cobourg Community Centre at 750 D'Arcy Street is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., with early morning entrance available through the east side of the building, by the back parking lot near the soccer fields

Northumberland County also provides an overnight winter warming room at County Headquarters, 555 Courthouse Road in Cobourg. Residents can take shelter from the cold and access washrooms and light refreshments from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., seven days a week, until March 31, 2026. The warming room is accessible from the upper parking lot at the rear of the County building.
